St. Augustine’s Cemetery is dedicated.

December 21, 1818

It is located at 181 Dorchester Street. The first Catholic burying ground in New England, it is founded by Bishop John Cheverus as a burial site for Rev. Francis Matignon. Other graves include those of the first Irish Catholic to serve on the Boston police force, the first Catholic to serve on the Boston Board of Aldermen, six veterans of the American Revolution, seven veterans of the Civil War, and an Ursuline sister who survived the Convent fire.
